PSALM 93

The summer before my freshman year of college, I spent a week in a condo in Gulf Shores, AL. My first night there, I woke up in the middle of the night. I felt like God wanted me to go out on the balcony and that I should bring my Bible with me. When I opened the sliding door, I noticed that the waves seemed unusually loud. I stood admiring the waves, and again I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit. This time he told me to turn to Psalm 93. As I read the words, my faith in God grew stronger. I wasn't just reading poetry. The book was describing what I was experiencing at that moment. There was the power of the ocean right in front of me, and the whole experience illustrated God's power in my life.

Yesterday morning, I opened up the Bible and found myself reading the same Psalm. After living through the destruction of hurricane Katrina, the Psalmist's words once again took on a personal meaning for me. Yes, the ocean's waves are powerful. But God is even more powerful.

Psalm 93

The LORD is king! He is robed in majesty.
Indeed, the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength.
The world is firmly established; it cannot be shaken.
Your throne, O LORD, has been established from time immemorial.
You yourself are from the everlasting past.
The mighty oceans have roared, O LORD.
The mighty oceans roar like thunder;
the mighty oceans roar as they pound the shore.
But mightier than the violent raging of the seas,
mightier than the breakers on the shore--
the LORD above is mightier than these!
Your royal decrees cannot be changed.
The nature of your reign, O LORD, is holiness forever.
